Maldivian CULTURE

Culture isn't something you can "wing" in the knowledge department in the Maldives. Locals follow the strict Islam religion, which has different expectations and beliefs than my own religion as a Christian. With that being said, some things to remember is to be respectful of their religion especially as a woman. An example is wearing conservative, non-revealing clothes when off the beach and especially when visiting Male.

 ... Visiting Male, Maldives

I want to dedicate a day solely to exploring Male, Maldives. The capital city has a lot of rich culture to offer from local markets to mosques. I would also want to indulge in the local staple food (fish and rice in Maldives) in the capital city. Food is such a big part of the vacation. I love to experiment and be "risky" with the unknown local flavours. A nice dinner overlooking the nightly entertainment would be ideal. By nightly entertainment, I am referring to more of the arts and musical culture of the Maldives. Food and music is such a powerful way for people to gain a lasting impression other cultures.

The Fish Market:
A known pit stop for tourists, and also a way to become one with the locals. I LOVE fish, especially when I go to exotic places because of the fresh variety of local catch. Engaging in local bargaining of the price for fish again emphasizes the integration of one into another culture.
